There's no perfect pass. We all see the same rack differently. And there's always a pass you wish you didn't have to make.

They often think because I’m the teacher, I know exactly the right perfect pass to make every single time - but in reality, we all see it differently and have different risk tolerances. So let’s play out a hand with me and see if you agree, or disagree - remember: there’s no right answer!

Here's what we're dealt

2 bam, 4 bam. 1 crak, 7 crak, 8 crak. 1 dot, 1 dot, 4 dot, 8 dot, 8 dot. West, West, South. And a green dragon.

First thing, I sort by suit. I like my dragons over on the right-hand side along with my winds, because it's just easier for me to see the patterns that way. Some people place their dragons with the suit they belong to, but I like to see them separately as most hands do not use dragons and those that do might need matching OR opposite dragons.

No flowers - bummer.

Now, what's actually here. Three 1s, sitting in only two suits. Three 8s, also in two suits. Two 4s. And one lonely 2.

I am naturally drawn to evens - my brain will usually see that section more than any other!

There's not gonna be a great answer here - and it’s only the first pass - so I want to keep my options open as best as possible. I see options in evens and any like numbers - so we’ll lean into that.

For Any Like Number - I’m keeping my 1s and 8s and Dragon

For Evens - Going to keep the 2s, 4s and 8s and Wests (East and West are used in evens, North and South for Odds).

That leaves me with some odd balls out - but not 3 of them unfortunately.

First right

Something has to go, so I'm just gonna have to be brave and pass the 7 crak, the South and a 1 dot.

The 7 crak is easy, it touches nothing. The South is a lone wind with no partner. The third one hurts, because I'm breaking into my own 1s to find it. It's not my favorite pass, but it'll be fine.

Back comes a 4 dot, a North, and a 1 bam.

The North does nothing for us. But that 1 matters more than it looks, because now we have 1s in all three suits.

Or maybe that's just me.

I teach this in nearly every strategy session I run, because it's the single thing that took that feeling away for me, and it has nothing to do with being better at mahjong. It's just how I lay out my rack.

Why picking three tiles is so much harder than it should be

Picking the first three sometimes isn’t the problem - it’s what happens immediately after the first pass.

You look at your rack and pick three tiles to pass. Fine. You pass them, three come back, and two of those you want to keep and one you want to pass. So now you're starting over. You've got one tile you're sure about and you need to find two more to go with it, from scratch, while three people wait on you. Then it happens again. And again. Six or seven times in a row.

That's a brand new decision every single pass, which is why it feels frantic. It isn't your speed. It's that you're being asked to solve it from nothing, over and over.

Sort once, then execute

After the deal, I lay my tiles out in three groups. All the tiles I want to keep on the left-hand side. The ones I maybe want to keep in the middle. And the ones I know for sure I want to pass on the right-hand side.

Keep, maybe, pass.

I make that one decision up front, and then I don't have to make it again. When three tiles come back to me, I don't start over. I just funnel them into the groups I already built and pass from the right-hand side.

The other thing it does, which I didn't expect when I started doing it, is that it lets me see all my passable tiles together in one place. So if I don't want to hand somebody a pair of something, I can actually see that, instead of trying to work it out in my head with everybody watching.

And it's fast. That's most of the point. I'm not holding anybody up.

What goes in each group

A quick word on "section," since I'm about to use it a lot. The card is grouped into sections, 2468 and 13579 and consecutive run and so on, and early in a hand you're trying to work out which section your tiles are leaning toward rather than which exact line you're going to play.

Keep. Tiles that fit whichever section you're leaning toward. Pairs you can build on. Flowers, jokers, and probably soaps or other dragons.

Maybe. Singles that could go either way, and anything that fits your backup section. Say you're torn between consecutive run and 13579, and you've got a stray 2. It's no use at all in 13579, but it could matter in a run, so it sits in the middle while you make up your mind.

Pass. Lone winds you don't need. Tiles from a section you've already ruled out. The ones you can afford to lose.

Sort them that way first, before you commit to a direction, and then let whatever comes back to you shape where you go.

The permission part

There is no wrong pass.

The only thing you're not allowed to pass during the Charleston is a joker. That's it. Every other pass is legal. So let go of the stress of trying to make the perfect pass, and just try to make your best pass.

I know the rules people repeat. Never pass a flower. Never pass a dragon. Never break up a pair. There's real thinking behind all of those, and I follow them most of the time. But they're preferences, not rules, and if you've been handed a genuinely good hand and the alternative is wrecking it, nobody's going to put you in mahjong jail for passing a flower.

It also helps to remember there are 99 tiles left in the wall after the Charleston ends. That's a lot of tiles. We're not trying to win the game during the Charleston. We're just trying to build the best possible hand we can.

What to do when nothing feels passable

This comes up constantly, and it's the whole reason I sort the way I do.

You have to pass, and everything on your rack feels like it's doing something. The answer is your second-best tile. Your worst tile isn't really a pass at all, you were never going to use it and you're just shuffling it along. So it's the one in between.

In practice that often means a tile you have multiples of. If you're going for a hand that needs a pung or a kong of something and you're holding two of them already, pass one. There's a decent chance it comes back around, or you pick it up off a discard, or a joker covers it.

And if you're holding a pair you've realized you don't need, break it up early. Pass one of them the moment you know, so you're never stuck later having to hand two of the same tile to the same person in a single pass.

Try it on your next hand

You don't have to change anything about how you play to try this. Next hand, take a minute after the deal and push your tiles into the three groups before the passing starts, and see whether it comes faster.

It's still the part of the game where everyone stares at you. I just have my answer ready before they do.

What you actually need to start

Less than you think. To play you need a mahjong set, the current National Mah Jongg League card, and three other people who want to learn with you. That is genuinely it.

• A set of tiles. You do not need a fancy one to begin. Any complete American set works.

• The current card. The National Mah Jongg League puts out a new card each year, and it lists every hand you are allowed to build. You play with it right in front of you.

• A table of players. The game is built for a foursome. You do not all need to know how to play. Learning together is half the fun.

The goal, in one sentence

Here is the whole game in a single line. You are racing to be the first player to build one of the hands printed on the card. That is it. Every tile you draw and every tile you let go is in service of that one job.

The card does the hard part. It shows you every winning hand for the year, so you are never guessing what counts. You are just choosing which hand your tiles are closest to and steering toward it.

How a game actually flows

Once you see the shape of a game, the mystery drops away. It goes like this.

• You build your wall and deal. The tiles are mixed, stacked, and dealt out so everyone starts with a rackful.

• You trade some tiles, called the Charleston. Early on, everyone passes tiles around the table a few times. It is a trade, not a sacrifice, a chance to swap away what you cannot use for something closer to your hand.

• You take turns. On your turn you take one tile and let one tile go, slowly shaping your rack toward a hand on the card.

• Someone completes a hand and calls it. The first to finish a hand on the card wins, and you reset and play again.

A few words you will hear

You do not need the whole vocabulary yet, but these four come up fast. The card is your menu of hands. The Charleston is the trading round at the start. A joker is a wild tile that can stand in for others inside a group of three or more, though never in a single or a pair. An exposure is simply tiles you have shown the table to claim a group. That is enough to follow along at your first game.

The first time I sat down to play, I was sure everyone could see how lost I was. What I did not understand then is that nobody starts knowing this. You learn it one small piece at a time, exactly like this, and one day you realize you are the one explaining it to a nervous beginner.

Why more games is not the answer

The instinct when you want to improve is to play more. But playing a game mostly rehearses what you already do. You reach for the same hands, you make the same reads, you avoid the same things you have always avoided. More reps of your current habits keep you exactly where you are.

Getting better comes from practicing the one specific thing you are weak at, on purpose, away from the pressure of a live table. A few focused minutes beats another full game you played on autopilot.

First, find your plateau

Almost everyone is stuck for one of a few reasons. See which one is you:

• You play the same hands every time. You have two or three go-to hands and you steer toward them no matter what you are dealt. Your range is narrow.

• You cannot tell when to pivot. You stay loyal to a hand long after it has died, because switching feels like quitting.

• You are always the slow one. You know what to do, but not quickly, so you hold up the table and rush your decisions.

• You waste your jokers. You leave them sitting in exposures, or you spend them on the easy tiles instead of saving them for the hard ones.

You probably knew yours before you finished the list. That is the one to work on.

How to actually break through

The fix is deliberate solo practice between games, on that one weak spot. You do not need a foursome or even a partner. You can drill at your own kitchen table with a practice game like SoloMahj, with two-handed or four-handed solitaire, or with an app like I Love Mahj when you only have ten minutes.

Say your plateau is playing the same hands. For one week, ban your favorite hand entirely. Force yourself into a new section you usually skip. Lay out a rack and challenge yourself to find two different hands in it instead of one. It feels awkward, and that awkwardness is the exact feeling of getting better.

Pick one weak spot, give it ten focused minutes a few times this week, and you will feel the difference at your very next game.

The freeze is far more common than you think

Almost every newer player feels it, and plenty of experienced ones still do on a hard hand. The reason it feels so isolating is that nobody says it out loud. Everyone is quietly sure they are the only one whose heart speeds up when the play comes around to them. They are not. You are in very good, very normal company.

Why your turn feels like a spotlight

When it is your turn, your brain tries to solve the entire game at once. What is my hand, what did she just discard, should I have wanted it, what do I keep, what do I let go, am I taking too long. That is a lot to hold, and the pressure of being watched makes it heavier. No wonder it locks up.

The fix is not to think faster. It is to give your brain a much smaller job.

A calmer way to take your turn

Your turn is actually only two actions. You take one tile, either the one you just drew from the wall or the one a player discarded, and then you put one tile down. That is the whole turn. Everything else is just noticing.

So slow it into a little loop you can lean on every single time:

• Take your tile. Draw it, or take the discard if it truly helps. Do not rush this decision. A breath here is allowed.

• Look at your tiles, then the card. Ask one quiet question. Did this tile move me closer to anything on the card?

• Let one tile go. Release the tile that fits your hand the least. You do not have to be certain. You only have to choose.

When the turn feels like too much, you are trying to do all three at once. Pulling them apart gives your mind somewhere to stand.

Small things that melt the freeze

A few gentle moves make a real difference. Tell your table you are still learning, out loud, on the first hand. It quietly gives you permission to take your time, and it almost always makes the group kinder. Play a few rounds at home with no one watching, so the motions feel familiar before the social pressure is added. And let go of the idea that a good player is a fast player. A thoughtful pause is not a flaw. It is the game.

I still remember freezing so badly at an early table that I discarded a tile I needed, just to make the staring stop. I wanted to disappear. What I did not know then is that the freeze fades, not because you get braver, but because the motions get familiar. It happens to everyone, and then quietly, one game at a time, it stops happening to you.

Start with a mat and a set you actually love

Everything begins here. A mat in a print that makes you smile, florals or something soft and happy, instantly changes the feel of the whole table. Pair it with a tile set you are drawn to, and bring out your nicest tiles rather than saving them for a someday that never comes. The pieces you love are the ones you will reach for again and again.

Set the table like you mean it

The bones of a beautiful mahjong table are simple. Give each of the four seats a rack with a little elbow room, keep a clean center for the wall, and add a small centerpiece with fresh flowers. That is honestly most of it. A few intentional touches make the room feel special before anyone has even sat down.

The small touches that make it an occasion

This is where a game night becomes a memory:

• Light it warmly. Soft, even light so every tile is easy to read, and a candle or two to make it feel like an occasion. Skip the harsh overhead that glares off the mat.

• Serve smart. Dry, one-bite foods like nuts, crackers, and grapes. Nothing greasy or staining near the tiles, and keep the drinks on a side table, off the mat.

• Set the sound. Cue a soft playlist before anyone arrives, low enough for easy conversation, and turn it down once the games heat up.

It is really about the people

The prettiest table in the world is just a setup until your people are around it. Seat a newer player next to a patient one, keep every card in view, and keep the mood light. The goal is a good night together, not a test.

And here is the touch that turns one lovely evening into a tradition: before anyone leaves, set the date for the next game night. A standing date is the whole secret. The table is the invitation, but the rhythm is what keeps everyone coming back.

She reads her own hand first

Before anything else, she looks at what she actually has and asks what it could become. She does not decide on a hand and then force her tiles toward it. She lets the tiles tell her where they want to go. That one habit, reading before deciding, prevents most of the trouble newer players get into.

She picks a direction, but holds it loosely

She commits to a hand early enough to have a plan, but stays ready to change if the game shifts. Confident does not mean stubborn. When her tiles or the table tell her the original plan has died, she pivots without drama. Flexibility is not indecision. It is exactly what keeps her in the game.

She is always reading the table

While she plays her own hand, she is quietly watching everyone else's. What are they discarding, what have they shown, what does that say about what they need. None of this is magic. It is just attention, and it turns every discard into information instead of noise.

She makes a clear choice and moves on

Here is the part that looks like confidence but is really just a habit. She makes the best decision she can with what she knows, lets the tile go, and does not agonize. She is not certain she is right. She has simply made peace with choosing under uncertainty, which is the entire game. The agonizing, not the wrong choice, is what slows people down.

She does not punish herself for a bad outcome

When a choice does not work out, she notes it and moves to the next hand. No spiral, no replaying it for an hour. That steadiness is what lets her keep thinking clearly, and it is the most learnable part of all.

None of this is talent. Read your hand, pick a direction, watch the table, choose and move on, stay steady. That is the whole checklist, and you can start running it at your very next game. The calm comes from the process, not from some gift you were born with or without.

The rule that changes everything: you cannot win second

Here is the rule to build your whole endgame around. You cannot declare mahjong second. The moment someone else calls it, the game is over for everyone. There is no close second place.

So once you realize your own hand is not going to come together, it has not become worthless. It has become a tool. Your new job is simple: make sure nobody else wins either.

Stop feeding the table

Late in the game, the tile you would normally toss without thinking might be the exact one someone is sitting and waiting on. So slow down before you throw.

Think of it this way. A win you quietly prevented is worth just as much as a hand you completed. Nobody claps for it, but it keeps the game alive and it keeps you from handing someone else the victory.

The safest tiles to throw

When you are playing defense, you want the tiles least likely to help anyone. The good news is they are easy to spot.

• Throw what is already down. The safest discard is usually a tile already sitting in the discards or exposed on someone's rack. If it did not get called the first time around, it is far less likely to hurt you now.

• Break your hand if you have to. When you know you cannot finish, it is completely fine to break up your own hand just to keep throwing safe tiles. The National Mah Jongg League even has a name for this defensive play near the end. They call it dogging.

A wall game is a draw, not a loss

If the tiles run all the way out and no one has declared mahjong, that is called a wall game. It is a draw. It happens to everyone, and reaching one on purpose, with no one able to win, is not losing. It is control.

You read the table, you protected your seat, and you let the clock run out on your terms. That is a calm, confident endgame, and it is every bit as much a sign of a good player as a flashy win.

You are being handed every layer at once

Most people meet mahjong as one giant pile: the tiles, the card, the Charleston, the jokers, the strategy, the etiquette, all in a single sitting. Of course that feels overwhelming. Anything would. It is like being handed an entire instruction manual and asked to act on page one and page ninety at the same time. The problem is the delivery, not your brain.

The game is actually a stack of small skills

Underneath the overwhelm, mahjong is just a handful of small skills layered on top of each other. Reading the card. Recognizing tiles. Choosing a hand. Taking a turn. Each one is genuinely manageable on its own. The flood only happens when you try to hold all of them in your head at the same moment, before any single one feels comfortable.

The fix is to learn one layer at a time

When I teach, I do not hand someone the whole game. We get comfortable reading the card first. Just that. Then we add picking a hand. Then a turn. Each piece gets a little familiar before the next one lands on top. Suddenly the thing that felt impossible as a pile feels totally doable as a staircase. Same game, completely different experience.

Overwhelm is a sign of order missing, not ability missing

So if you have felt that flood, please do not read it as evidence that you cannot do this. Read it as a sign that you were handed the pile instead of the staircase. Give yourself permission to learn one layer at a time, in order, and let each one settle before the next. The game gets quiet almost immediately when you do.

Why "just play more" doesn't work

If you want to get better at mahjong, you do have to play. But a live game is five things happening at once. You're reading exposures, running the Charleston, tracking discards, managing jokers, and deciding which hand you're even playing. If one of those is shaky, the whole game feels shaky, and you can't tell which piece to work on.

Isolated practice fixes that. You pull one skill out, drill it until it's automatic, then put it back into your game. It's the difference between feeling stuck and watching yourself get faster, week over week.

The best place I've found to do that is the Exercise Room on I Love Mahj, a website where you can play American mahjong online and drill specific skills on purpose. It's what I use myself and what I hand every student who asks me how to practice between games.

What is the I Love Mahj Exercise Room?

It's five drills, and each one trains a different muscle:

• Make a Hand. The site deals you a rack and you build a hand from the card. It's the fastest way I know to burn the 2026 patterns into your brain, because you're not reading the hand, you're assembling it.

• Charleston Practice. A full Charleston, run against the app, so you can watch yourself choose passes without four faces staring at you. This is where most players improve the fastest.

• What hand is that? The site shows you an exposure and asks which hand that player is going for. Reading exposures on sight is the skill that separates good players from great ones at a live table.

• Mahjle. Wordle, but for mahjong hands. You get a partial hand and figure out which line it belongs to. A perfect five-minute daily warmup.

• Heavenly Hands. The drill for the rare stuff, the hands you might go a full year without seeing in a live game. You meet them here on purpose, so when one shows up at your table you don't freeze.

How to run the ten-minute rotation

You don't need to do all five drills every day. That's the whole point. Ten minutes, one or two drills, on rotation. Build hands one morning, read exposures the next, run a Charleston the morning after. By the time you sit down at a real table, every piece of your game has been warmed up on its own.

If you only do one thing this week, open Make a Hand and play it for ten minutes with the 2026 card in front of you. That's the fastest way to start trusting your hand choices. And save Heavenly Hands for last in your rotation. It's the advanced shelf, and it's much more fun once the other drills feel steady.

The trick that got me out of my one-section rut

Here's the habit I pair with my own drilling. Print your card, and every time you win a hand in a live game, put a small dot next to it. Then, when you sit down to practice, make yourself pick from the hands that don't have dots yet.

I do this with my own card. It turned "I only play Consecutive Run" into "I can play any section" in about six weeks. The dots don't lie. They show you exactly where your comfort zone ends, and the Exercise Room is where you push past it with nothing on the line.

Here is the secret. Ready is not a feeling that arrives one day. It is a line you have probably already crossed. See how many of these sound like you.

1. You can find a hand on the card, even slowly

You do not need to spot the perfect hand in two seconds. If you can look at your tiles, look at the card, and point to a hand you could work toward, you are ready. Slow and correct beats fast and lost every time, and the speed comes later on its own.

2. You usually know what to keep and what to let go

When you look at your rack, you have a rough sense of which tiles are helping you and which are not. That instinct, keep this, release that, is the actual heartbeat of the game. If you have it even a little, you have more than enough to begin.

3. You have stopped asking what every tile is

Early on, every tile is a small puzzle. At some point you realize you are just reading them now, the way you read words instead of sounding out letters. If the tiles have started to feel familiar rather than foreign, that is a clear green light.

4. You can take your turn without panicking

You take a tile, you let one go. If the basic rhythm of a turn no longer makes your heart race, you are ready for a real table. A few nerves are normal and they fade fast. They are not a reason to keep waiting on the sidelines.

5. You would rather play than study

This is the biggest one. If you are starting to feel a little restless with practicing, if you find yourself wanting to just sit down and play already, listen to that. It means studying has taken you as far as it can, and the table is where you grow now.

If even two or three of these sound like you, please stop waiting to feel ready. You learn this game by playing it, not by preparing forever. The women at the table are not judging you. They are happy you came.

There is no version of learning this game where you skip the part where you are not good yet. Every single confident player went through it. The women who never get good are almost always the ones who were not willing to be visibly new for a little while. Being a beginner in front of people is the price of admission, and it is worth paying.

The thing nobody tells you when you are learning mahjong is that you can practice without three other people. You do not need a standing game or a full table to get better. You just need a way to keep your hands and your eyes on the tiles between games, and there are more of those than you think.

Start solo with a practice board

SoloMahj is a physical practice board, not an app. It gives you a single rack so you can deal yourself tiles, run a Charleston, and practice picking a hand off the card, all on your own. It is the lowest-pressure way to get comfortable with the motions: reading the card, recognizing tiles, committing to a direction. Add a second rack with two-handed solitaire

Once one rack feels natural, add a second. Two-handed solitaire is a method I built with Jillian, @mahjeltov, and Alicia, @mrsmahj, and it has you running two hands at once, planning each rack's Charleston passes before you peek at the other. That little bit of not-knowing is the whole point. It is the closest you can get to a real Charleston without a real table. I have a free step-by-step guide for it - you can grab it here.

Build all four hands with four-handed solitaire

When you are ready for the full board, four-handed solitaire puts all four seats in front of you. This method comes from my friend Alicia, the Mrs. Mahj, and her Practice System is the clearest walkthrough out there, packed with tips and tricks you will not find in any free resource. It is the version I recommend. Because you can see all four hands, it is fantastic for learning the card sections, racking up practice wins, and making real Charleston and pivot decisions.

One honest caveat: since nothing is hidden, four-handed solitaire will not teach you to read your opponents. For that, you need hidden hands and a little pressure. That is the next tool.

Which one should you start with?

Wherever you are right now. If the card still looks like a foreign language, start with one rack. If your Charleston instincts are shaky, go two-handed. If you want reps and wins, four-handed. If you want to feel a real game, go online. The point is never which tool. The point is that you keep tiles in front of you between games, even for a few minutes, because that is what actually moves you forward.

It is an editing process. You keep the tiles that are earning their spot and let go of the ones that are not helping your hand.

Most new players play heads down. You watch your own rack, you pick, you discard, and the rest of the table is a blur. Then someone declares mahjong and you never saw it coming.

Reading the table can feel like a skill other people have and you do not. It is not. It is a habit, and you build it one discard at a time. You can start at your very next game.

Every discard is information

Here is the whole idea in one line. Every tile a player throws is them telling you, out loud, what they have decided they do not need. You do not have to memorize anything. You just have to notice the pattern.

Once you start watching the discards instead of ignoring them, the table stops being a blur and starts being a conversation.

What the discards are telling you

A few reads you can pick up right away:

• Early flowers talk. Flowers show up in 22 of the 55 hands on the 2026 card. So when someone tosses a flower early, that hand probably does not use them. You just learned something about their plan.

• Which numbers they dump. When a player keeps throwing the same number family, evens, odds, or 3s 6s 9s, they are telling you which section they have ruled out. The numbers they let go point you toward the ones they are keeping.

• What they stop throwing. The tiles a player suddenly holds matter as much as the ones they throw. When the discards go quiet in one number family, assume they are collecting it, and slow down before you feed it.

When they expose, they show you their hand

The clearest read of all is an exposure. When a player calls a tile and lays a pung or kong face up on their rack, that is public and locked in. It tells you exactly which section they have committed to.

Here is the move most players miss: watch the very next tile they discard after exposing. It shows you what they just ruled out as they narrow toward their hand. One exposure plus one discard often tells you most of what they are holding.

Let the read come to you

You do not force any of this. You are not solving a puzzle on turn three. You collect small signals, an early flower here, a number family going quiet there, and let the picture form. By the middle of the game, the table has basically narrated itself to anyone who was paying attention.

And that is the real payoff of defensive play. When you can see who is close, you stop handing them the tile that wins. You play your own hand and you stop feeding theirs.

When you are new, looking at your tiles and then looking at the card feels like trying to read two different languages at once. The card has 55 hands on it, and your eyes do not know where to land.

So here is the exact scan I run every game. It is not magic and it is not fast at first. But it is repeatable, and with a little use it really does get down to about thirty seconds.

Step 1: Sort before you scan

Before you even glance at the card, organize your tiles. Group your dots together, your bams together, your craks together, and set your winds, dragons, and flowers to the side. You cannot read a hand you have not sorted. This one step alone removes half the overwhelm, because now you can actually see what you have.

Step 2: Find your concentration

Look at your sorted tiles and ask one question: where am I already strong? Maybe you have three or four tiles in one number. Maybe a little run forming. Maybe a pile of even numbers, or several winds and dragons. You are looking for where your tiles are already clustered, because that cluster is your clue to which part of the card to read.

Step 3: Match the cluster to a section

Now, and only now, go to the card, and go straight to the section your cluster points to. Strong in even numbers? Look at 2468. A run forming? Consecutive Run. Lots of odds? 13579. Winds and dragons? Their section. You are not reading the whole card. You are reading the one or two sections your tiles already nominated. That is the entire trick: let your tiles tell you where to look.

Step 4: Pick two candidates, not one

In those sections, find the two hands you are closest to, not just one. Early on, you want options, because the game will shift. Holding two possible directions keeps you flexible instead of locked into a single hand that might die. Note as you go whether each one is an exposed hand or a concealed one, and remember that singles and pairs cannot use a joker, so those hands lean harder.

Step 5: Let the system pick your discard

Once you have your two candidates, your discard becomes obvious. The tile that helps neither direction is the one that goes. You are no longer guessing what to throw. The scan made the choice for you.

That is the whole system. Sort, find your concentration, match it to a section, pick two candidates, and let that decide your discard. The first few times it will feel slow and deliberate, and that is exactly right. Run it enough and it collapses into a single calm glance, the thing that looks like instinct in experienced players but is really just this, practiced.

The photos are always the joyful version. Four friends who already know the game, mid-laugh, tiles clicking. What you do not see is the woman watching that table thinking she would love to be there, if only she understood what was happening. Or the one who got invited once, felt completely lost, and quietly never went back.

That gap, between wanting to belong at the table and feeling ready to sit down at it, is real. And sitting in it by yourself is the lonely part nobody warns you about.

Why learning a game later in life feels so vulnerable

By the time we are adults, we are used to being competent. We are the ones who know how things work, who help other people, who have it handled. Then you pick up a brand new game, and suddenly you are the slowest one in the room, asking questions you are sure are obvious.

That is uncomfortable in a way it simply was not when we were kids. Being a beginner as a grown woman asks you to be openly, visibly new at something. It is a kind of brave we do not give ourselves nearly enough credit for.

You are not behind, you are new

I want to gently retire the word behind. Behind implies there is a pace you were supposed to keep, and you missed it. There is no such pace. There is only new, and new is temporary.

Every confident player at every table you admire was, at some point, exactly where you are. Holding tiles she did not understand, hoping nobody noticed. The only difference between her and you is a little time and a few more hands. That is genuinely it.

How to find your table

The loneliness lifts the moment you realize how many women are quietly in it with you. So find them on purpose. A beginner class where everyone is equally new. An online group where no question is too small. A standing date with one friend who is also learning, even if you are both a little lost together. Lost together is its own kind of fun.

That is honestly why I started sharing this game at all. I learned it feeling like the only beginner in the world, and then I found out there were tens of thousands of us. We were just all sitting alone in our own kitchens, thinking everyone else already knew. You were never the only one. You just had not found the rest of us yet.
