Most new players play heads down. You watch your own rack, you pick, you discard, and the rest of the table is a blur. Then someone declares mahjong and you never saw it coming.

Reading the table can feel like a skill other people have and you do not. It is not. It is a habit, and you build it one discard at a time. You can start at your very next game.

Every discard is information

Here is the whole idea in one line. Every tile a player throws is them telling you, out loud, what they have decided they do not need. You do not have to memorize anything. You just have to notice the pattern.

Once you start watching the discards instead of ignoring them, the table stops being a blur and starts being a conversation.

What the discards are telling you

A few reads you can pick up right away:

• Early flowers talk. Flowers show up in 22 of the 55 hands on the 2026 card. So when someone tosses a flower early, that hand probably does not use them. You just learned something about their plan.

• Which numbers they dump. When a player keeps throwing the same number family, evens, odds, or 3s 6s 9s, they are telling you which section they have ruled out. The numbers they let go point you toward the ones they are keeping.

• What they stop throwing. The tiles a player suddenly holds matter as much as the ones they throw. When the discards go quiet in one number family, assume they are collecting it, and slow down before you feed it.

When they expose, they show you their hand

The clearest read of all is an exposure. When a player calls a tile and lays a pung or kong face up on their rack, that is public and locked in. It tells you exactly which section they have committed to.

Here is the move most players miss: watch the very next tile they discard after exposing. It shows you what they just ruled out as they narrow toward their hand. One exposure plus one discard often tells you most of what they are holding.

Let the read come to you

You do not force any of this. You are not solving a puzzle on turn three. You collect small signals, an early flower here, a number family going quiet there, and let the picture form. By the middle of the game, the table has basically narrated itself to anyone who was paying attention.

And that is the real payoff of defensive play. When you can see who is close, you stop handing them the tile that wins. You play your own hand and you stop feeding theirs.

When you are new, looking at your tiles and then looking at the card feels like trying to read two different languages at once. The card has 55 hands on it, and your eyes do not know where to land.

So here is the exact scan I run every game. It is not magic and it is not fast at first. But it is repeatable, and with a little use it really does get down to about thirty seconds.

Step 1: Sort before you scan

Before you even glance at the card, organize your tiles. Group your dots together, your bams together, your craks together, and set your winds, dragons, and flowers to the side. You cannot read a hand you have not sorted. This one step alone removes half the overwhelm, because now you can actually see what you have.

Step 2: Find your concentration

Look at your sorted tiles and ask one question: where am I already strong? Maybe you have three or four tiles in one number. Maybe a little run forming. Maybe a pile of even numbers, or several winds and dragons. You are looking for where your tiles are already clustered, because that cluster is your clue to which part of the card to read.

Step 3: Match the cluster to a section

Now, and only now, go to the card, and go straight to the section your cluster points to. Strong in even numbers? Look at 2468. A run forming? Consecutive Run. Lots of odds? 13579. Winds and dragons? Their section. You are not reading the whole card. You are reading the one or two sections your tiles already nominated. That is the entire trick: let your tiles tell you where to look.

Step 4: Pick two candidates, not one

In those sections, find the two hands you are closest to, not just one. Early on, you want options, because the game will shift. Holding two possible directions keeps you flexible instead of locked into a single hand that might die. Note as you go whether each one is an exposed hand or a concealed one, and remember that singles and pairs cannot use a joker, so those hands lean harder.

Step 5: Let the system pick your discard

Once you have your two candidates, your discard becomes obvious. The tile that helps neither direction is the one that goes. You are no longer guessing what to throw. The scan made the choice for you.

That is the whole system. Sort, find your concentration, match it to a section, pick two candidates, and let that decide your discard. The first few times it will feel slow and deliberate, and that is exactly right. Run it enough and it collapses into a single calm glance, the thing that looks like instinct in experienced players but is really just this, practiced.

The photos are always the joyful version. Four friends who already know the game, mid-laugh, tiles clicking. What you do not see is the woman watching that table thinking she would love to be there, if only she understood what was happening. Or the one who got invited once, felt completely lost, and quietly never went back.

That gap, between wanting to belong at the table and feeling ready to sit down at it, is real. And sitting in it by yourself is the lonely part nobody warns you about.

Why learning a game later in life feels so vulnerable

By the time we are adults, we are used to being competent. We are the ones who know how things work, who help other people, who have it handled. Then you pick up a brand new game, and suddenly you are the slowest one in the room, asking questions you are sure are obvious.

That is uncomfortable in a way it simply was not when we were kids. Being a beginner as a grown woman asks you to be openly, visibly new at something. It is a kind of brave we do not give ourselves nearly enough credit for.

You are not behind, you are new

I want to gently retire the word behind. Behind implies there is a pace you were supposed to keep, and you missed it. There is no such pace. There is only new, and new is temporary.

Every confident player at every table you admire was, at some point, exactly where you are. Holding tiles she did not understand, hoping nobody noticed. The only difference between her and you is a little time and a few more hands. That is genuinely it.

How to find your table

The loneliness lifts the moment you realize how many women are quietly in it with you. So find them on purpose. A beginner class where everyone is equally new. An online group where no question is too small. A standing date with one friend who is also learning, even if you are both a little lost together. Lost together is its own kind of fun.

That is honestly why I started sharing this game at all. I learned it feeling like the only beginner in the world, and then I found out there were tens of thousands of us. We were just all sitting alone in our own kitchens, thinking everyone else already knew. You were never the only one. You just had not found the rest of us yet.

Picking a hand is where a lot of new players freeze. Choose too late and you have passed away tiles you needed with no plan. Choose too early and you feel locked into a hand that may never come together.

The fix is not to pick perfectly. It is to pick a direction early and hold it loosely. Here is the method I teach, the one that lets you commit without painting yourself into a corner.

Sort first, so you can actually see

Before you decide anything, get organized. Group your tiles by suit, then put each suit in order, low to high. Set your winds, dragons, and flowers off to the side together. A sorted rack turns a scramble into something you can read at a glance, and you cannot choose a hand you cannot see.

Pick the section, not the hand

This is the shift that makes it click. Do not hunt for one perfect hand. Look at the card by section and ask which number theme your tiles already lean toward. A pile of 2s, 4s, 6s, and 8s points you to 2468. A little run of numbers points to Consecutive Run. Chase the section you are already feeding, not the one that looks the fanciest.

Then, inside that section, find the line you already have the most tiles for. Count what you have, then count what you still need. A hand you are several tiles into will almost always beat a flashier one you have barely started.

Commit by the end of the Charleston, and keep a backup

Here is the part that keeps you from boxing yourself in. Choose your hand by the time the Charleston ends, so your passing actually has a purpose. But keep one backup line in the back of your mind, ideally one that shares a lot of the same tiles.

You have the first few turns to adjust if the table tells you something new. What you cannot do is wait until the end and start over. Early and loose beats late and locked, every time.

If the hand dies, let it go

Sometimes the tiles you need simply stop coming, or everyone keeps discarding them. When that happens, the hand is gone, and that is not a failure. Pivoting early to a line that shares your tiles is one of the smartest moves you can make. Staying loyal to a hand that has died is the single thing that costs beginners the most.

One quick note on jokers as you choose: they can fill any group of three or more, but never a pair. If you are short on jokers, lean toward pair-heavy lines and plan to collect those naturals yourself.

Somewhere along the way, a myth took hold. That the real players have the whole card memorized, and until you do, you are only pretending to know how to play.

I want to put that one to rest. You do not need to memorize the card to play well. Trying to is one of the quietest reasons beginners stay stuck, because it turns a game you are supposed to enjoy into a test you keep failing.

The card is meant to be on the table

Here is the part that gets lost. The card is designed to sit in front of you while you play. Every player has it, face up, the whole game. You are allowed to look at it as often as you like. Nobody is going to slide it away and ask you to recite the 369 section from memory.

So the skill that actually matters is not recalling the card with your eyes closed. It is reading the card with it open. Those are two completely different things, and only one of them wins games.

What to build instead of a memory

Strong players are not faster at remembering. They are faster at scanning. When they pick up their tiles, they are not searching their memory for a hand. They are looking at the card and asking what their tiles could become.

Learn the sections, not the hands. You only need to know roughly where to look. Which part of the card is the consecutive runs, which part is the like numbers, which part holds the singles and pairs.

Read your tiles first, then shop. Notice what you were dealt, then scan the card for the hands those tiles are closest to. Let the card answer the question instead of forcing your tiles toward a hand you already had in mind.

Get comfortable looking. Glancing at the card mid-game is not a beginner tell. It is how the game is meant to be played.

Why memorizing too early backfires

When you push to memorize a few hands fast, you tend to fall in love with those few. You steer toward them no matter what you draw, because they are the ones you know. Your range stays narrow, and you miss the better hand sitting right there on the card because you never looked.

The irony is that the players who lean on the card the most early on are usually the ones who end up needing it the least. Reading it over and over is how the card slowly moves into your head, without a single flashcard.

The one habit worth committing to memory

If you memorize anything, do not make it a hand. Make it a question. Before you commit to a direction, ask yourself, what do my tiles want to be? Then look at the card and let it show you. That single habit will carry you further than knowing ten hands cold.

I taught myself this game with the card propped against a coffee mug, glancing at it every few seconds and feeling sure everyone else had it memorized and I was hopelessly behind. They did not, and I was not. Years later, teaching tens of thousands of women, I still glance at the card every single game. It is not a crutch. It is the tool.

Jokers are the most powerful tile in American mahjong, and also the one new players are least sure about. Can you pass one? Can you grab one off the table? Why will the card not let you use one in a pair?

Here is every joker rule you actually need, in plain English. Nothing extra, just the ones that come up at a real table.

1. A joker is a wild tile, inside a group

A joker can stand in for any tile inside a group of three or more, which means a pung, a kong, a quint, or a sextet. You do not even need a natural tile to start. A group can be made entirely of jokers if that is what you are holding.

So if your hand calls for a kong of 6 dots, a joker can be any of those four 6 dots. That is what makes jokers so valuable, and why you should be slow to give them up. The one place a joker can never go is a single or a pair. Those have to be natural tiles, every time.

2. Once a joker is discarded, it is gone

The moment a joker is thrown into the discards, it is out of the game. No one can call it or pick it up, for any reason. So if you ever have to let a joker go, you are not handing it to anyone, it just leaves the game for good.

That is worth remembering on the rare day you have to part with one. A discarded joker helps nobody, including the person who threw it.

3. You can redeem a joker off any rack

This is the rule that turns a joker into a real advantage. When a joker is sitting in an exposure on the table, the player who holds the matching natural tile can swap that tile in and take the joker. And it does not have to be your own exposure. You can redeem a joker off any rack at the table, including an opponent’s.

The timing matters: it has to be your turn, and you pick your tile from the wall or call for an exposure first, then make the swap. Do that and you free up a joker to use wherever your hand needs it more. Beginners leave jokers sitting on the table for whole games without realizing they could have grabbed them.

4. Redeeming a joker can win you the hand

If you redeem a joker to complete your own hand, you can declare mahjong that same turn. It counts as self picked, which means every player pays you double. A joker can quite literally win you the game and pay you twice for it.

The one thing to take with you

Jokers stop being mysterious the moment someone lays the rules out plainly. Hold onto them, watch the table for ones you can redeem, and remember that the only place they cannot go is a single or a pair.

I still get a little thrill every time I redeem a joker off someone else’s rack right before I call mahjong. It never gets old. That move felt impossible to me when I started, and now it is just part of how I play. That is all getting better really is, turning the rules that once confused you into the moves you reach for.

Here are the five I see at nearly every table, and exactly how to fix each.

1. Locking onto one hand too early

You picked a hand early, you got attached, and now the tiles you need just are not coming. So you keep waiting for them anyway. That is the most common way a beginner runs out of game.

The fix: check in around the halfway mark. If the tiles you need are not showing up, pivot to a hand your rack already supports. Switching is smart, not quitting.

2. Calling every tile you can

Early on, it is tempting to call a discarded tile every time you are allowed to, just because you can. But every tile you call for an exposure turns those tiles face up for the whole table to see, and it commits you toward one specific hand before you may be ready.

The fix: only call when the tile genuinely moves a hand you feel good about. A tile you can call is not always a tile you should. Staying concealed a little longer keeps your options open and keeps your plan to yourself.

3. Forgetting to watch the discards

Beginners tend to stare at their own rack and tune out everything else. But the discards are where half the game is happening.

The fix: glance up after each throw. The discards show you which tiles are already gone and what the rest of the table is collecting, so you pick more safely and start to read the table sooner.

4. Calling mahjong without checking the card

It is the most exciting moment and the easiest one to rush. You think you have it, you call it, and then it does not quite match a line on the card.

The fix: before you expose it, point to the exact line on the card and count your 14 tiles against it. An exposed hand that does not match can be declared dead. A dead hand cannot win, and you still pay the winner when someone else does. Ten seconds of checking saves you that.

Do not let this scare you off calling or “pausing” to check. You can say pause or call and check before you lay your hand down, so call when you see it, just confirm before you expose.

5. Freezing when it feels like too much

When the game feels overwhelming, it is tempting to freeze, hold everything, and hope. But indecision quietly wastes turn after turn.

The fix: pick a direction and let your rack and the discards guide each throw. You do not have to play perfectly. Confident and observant beats frozen every time.

The one thing to take with you

If you take one thing from this, take this: play the hand in front of you, not the one you wish you had. Stay flexible, keep an eye on the table, and be kind to yourself while you learn. Every single game teaches you one more read, even the ones you lose.

I still make a version of mistake number one more often than I would like to admit. The difference now is that I catch it at the halfway mark instead of the end. That is all getting better really is, catching the same slip a little sooner each time.

A little over a year ago, I could not play American mahjong. Not one hand. Today I spend my weeks teaching it to women all over the country. People keep asking me how that happened, so here is the honest version.

It started with a text

A friend texted me one day and asked if I wanted to learn mahjong with her. Something we could do together. Neither of us had any idea how to play, and there was no one nearby to teach us. So I did the thing I do with anything I want to understand. I sat down and taught myself, one rule at a time, mostly from ChatGPT (YIKES!). If you have ever tried to learn a real game from an AI that answers every question with total confidence, whether it is right or not, you know the particular comedy I am talking about. I got there eventually.

I expected it to be a fun little hobby for the two of us. I did not expect it to take over my life.

Then forty women showed up

Once it finally clicked for me, I offered to teach a beginner session at our local country club. I figured a handful of friends might come. Over forty women signed up.

That was the moment something shifted. It was not just me who wanted this. A whole room of women wanted a calm, friendly way into a game that looks intimidating from the outside, and almost nobody was offering it that way.

So I built the thing I wished I had

Here is what I kept running into. The information was out there, but it was scattered, and so much of it was written like a rulebook instead of like a friend walking you through your first game. Where I live, there were no local teachers to send anyone to.

So I started making what I wished someone had handed me on day one. Simple guides. Short videos. And eventually a place to actually learn together, week after week, instead of feeling stuck and alone with the card.

I will let you in on the part that surprises people. My background is in finance. I am a CPA, which means I am wired to take something complicated and turn it into a clear, repeatable system. It turns out the NMJL card responds beautifully to that kind of thinking, and most of what I teach is really just that, a calm system you can lean on.

Somewhere along the way I also fell all the way down the rabbit hole. These days I spend more time than I will admit reading everything I can find about this game, and at some point I became a certified instructor almost without noticing.

What I am actually teaching

Somewhere along the way I figured out what this is really about. Most of us do not need more information. We need someone to point at the thing we are already doing well and say, that, do more of that. What was missing was confidence, plain and simple.

So that is what I teach toward, every single week. Not how to memorize the card, but how to sit down at a table and feel like you belong there.

I do all of this alongside a full-time career and two little ones, ages five and seven. So I have a deep respect for your time, and not much patience for fluff. Mostly I try to be the calm voice I wish I had had when I was staring at that card for the first time. I love it more than I expected to.

It is not that at all. The Charleston is a trade, not a sacrifice. Once you see how it works, you will actually look forward to it.

What the Charleston actually is

Before anyone plays a single tile, everyone at the table passes tiles around to improve their hands. You pass three, and you receive three, every single time. So your hand never gets smaller. You are swapping the tiles that do not fit the hand you want for a fresh three that might fit better.

Everyone is doing this at the same time, so the whole table is quietly shaping their hands before the first discard. That is all it is: a few rounds of organized trading to give everyone a better starting point.

The passing order, step by step

The Charleston follows a set order. The first Charleston is required, and it goes:

1. Pass 3 tiles to the right.

2. Pass 3 tiles across.

3. Pass 3 tiles to the left.*

After that comes an optional second Charleston, which runs in the opposite direction:

1. Pass 3 tiles to the left.

2. Pass 3 tiles across.

3. Pass 3 tiles to the right.*

*These passes also have the option for a blind pass….more on that later.

Any player can stop the Charleston after the first Charleston, so the second one only happens if everyone wants it. All it takes it one person to stop it.

Then there is one last optional move, the courtesy pass, where you and the player across from you can agree to swap up to three tiles - lowest number of tiles wins. After that, East makes the first discard and the game begins.

Why you never pass your best tiles

Here is the reassurance you came for. You choose which three tiles to pass, so you pass the ones that do not fit the hand you are building. The tiles you need stay right on your rack. You are never forced to give away something you want.

Think of it like editing. You are letting go of the tiles that are not earning their spot, and making room for better ones to come to you. If all three tiles you are looking at seem useful, that is a good sign your hand is coming together, and there is a tool for exactly that moment.

The blind pass, for when you cannot spare three

That tool is the blind pass. If you genuinely cannot spare three tiles, you can pass one or two from your rack and fill the rest with the tiles coming in to you, without looking at them. The NMJL allows a blind pass on the first left of the first Charleston and the last right of the second Charleston.

It is how you protect a hand you do not want to break apart. Use it when your tiles are simply too good to give up, not as a habit. Most of the time you will have three tiles you are happy to let go.

The part that finally made it click for me

I used to dread the Charleston. I would stare at my rack convinced I was about to pass away the one tile that would have won me the game. What changed was a simple realization: I get to keep everything I am actually building, and I only ever let go of the tiles I was not using anyway.

Now it is one of my favorite parts of the game. It is the first place a beginner gets to make a real decision, and you cannot truly get it wrong. You pass three, you get three, and your hand gets a little closer to something you can win with.

You are not. The card is not a rulebook you have to memorize. It is this year’s menu of winning hands, and once you know how it is organized, it reads less like code and more like a recipe card.

Let me walk you through it the way I wish someone had walked me through it.

The card is a list of winning hands, in 9 sections

The whole card is one thing: this year’s list of the hands you are allowed to win with. That list is split into 9 sections, and each section is named for the type of tiles it uses.

Here are the sections on the 2026 card:

• 2026

• 2468

• Any Like Numbers

• Quints

• Consecutive Run

• 13579

• Winds and Dragons

• 369

• Singles and Pairs

You build one hand from one line in one section. That is it. The 2468 section uses even numbers. The 369 section uses 3s, 6s, and 9s. Winds and Dragons use those tiles. You do not have to understand all 9 sections at once. You just have to find one line you like and build it.

The colors tell you how many suits, not which ones

This is the single thing that trips up almost every beginner, so read this part twice.

First, the basics: mahjong tiles come in three suits, called dots, bams, and craks. On the card, the color of the numbers does not mean a specific suit. It tells you two things: how many suits a hand uses, and how those suits are distributed across the line. It never tells you which suits to use. That part is your choice.

Same color means same suit. Different colors mean different suits.

333 666 6666 9999 or 333 666 6666 9999 (Any 2 or 3 Suits) 25 X

So if a line is all one color, you build the whole thing in a single suit. If it shows two colors, you use two different suits, and the colors show you which groups belong together. You pick the actual suits. The card only tells you how many, and how they are split.

The first line of the 369 section shows this perfectly, because it gives you two versions:

333 666 6666 9999 uses two colors, so two suits. The groupings of three 3s and 6s share one suit, and the groupings of four 6s and the 9s are a different suit.

333 666 6666 9999 uses three colors, so three suits. The 3s and 6s are one suit, the second set of 6s is a second suit, and the 9s are a third suit.

Same numbers, different coloring, different number of suits. The card is not telling you to use bams or dots. It is telling you how many suits to use and which groups share one. You choose which suits those are. That is also why the card notes “Any 2 or 3 Suits” beside this line.

Once that clicks, half the mystery of the card disappears.

Every line is built from groupings

Each line is made of small groups of tiles. These are the building blocks, and they have names based on how many tiles are in them.

A quick joker note, because it matters: singles and pairs never use a joker. Pungs and kongs can. Quints and sextets always need a joker, because only four of each tile exist in the set.

So a line in the 2468 section might be a pung of 2s, a pung of 4s, a kong of 6s, and a kong of 8s. In one color, you build all of it in a single suit. In two colors, you split it across two suits.

Not every group is matching tiles

Here is a small twist that confuses people. Some groups are not matching tiles at all. They are different tiles sitting in a row, and each one is a single. Because they are singles, they never use a joker.

Two examples you will see:

• Four Winds: N, E, W, S. Four individual, different tiles.

• A run of numbers like 2, 4, 6, 8. Four individual, different tiles.

A year hand like 2, 0, 2, 6 works the same way. Four different tiles, all singles, no jokers. So when you see those, you know not to go looking for a joker to help you.

Now read one full line, left to right

Once you know the pieces, reading an actual line is simple. Every line reads the same way, left to right: the tiles first, then the parentheses, then the points.

Say the card shows this:

222 444 6666 8888 or 222 444 6666 8888 (Any 1 or 2 Suits) 25 X

Read left to right, it says: a pung of 2s, a pung of 4s, a kong of 6s, and a kong of 8s.

• The tiles and their groups are the pattern. That part is fixed. You collect exactly those tiles in exactly those groups. You cannot mix in a tile the line does not call for.

• The parentheses are the only flexibility. They are your allowed swaps, like a recipe that says “any 1 or 2 suits” or “these numbers only.” That is the one thing you get to choose. Read it before you commit.

• The points are what the hand pays when you win it. The X or C tells you exposed or concealed. X means you can expose tiles as you build. C means you keep the hand concealed and draw it yourself until the tile you win on.

That is the whole card. Pick a line, follow the recipe, and use only the swaps it allows.

The trick that finally made it stick for me

I read about the card for ages before any of it felt real. What changed everything was laying it out with actual tiles.

Pick one line you like. I would start in 2468 or 13579, the two friendliest sections. Read it out loud, left to right: the tiles, then the parentheses, then the points. Then build that one line on your rack with real tiles in front of you.

The moment you do that, the card stops being abstract. You are not decoding a grid anymore. You are looking at a hand you could actually make. Do that with one line tonight, and you will read the card a little differently tomorrow.
